So, go for a progressive style JKD, or even best, a well-rounded MMA gym with a variety of styles from where to learn what suits you best. Lee's personal techniques have a lot of merit, but his greatest achievement was making acceptable to cross-train and take from other styles until you found what suits you best. I have sparred with friends that have training in TKD and Karate and had success in using what I have learned, particularly the clinch stuff and the grappling. I have also pulled off some simple traps in boxing sparring outside the club, however they tend to be a one time deal, a half decent boxer won't fall for shit more than once usually. Best I can tell the grappling is a fairly eclectic mix, hard for me to pin it all down in origin.Īs to using it, I actually find center line a useful concept in sparring. We also come through Sifu Hartsell so we have more grappling shown than what I understand most clubs do. Our instructor teaches that the basics techniques are fairly similar across all arts when taught properly, so for instance I am encouraged to use my boxing training in sparring because to our way of thinking it all fits.Īny previous training we have is welcomed and we are shown to incorporate it. The core curriculum is like an OJKD school, however we are encouraged to cross train and we are shown things from other styles our instructor has experience in, namely Judo, Wing Chun and Muay Thai.
